Manx Mencap has been awarded £30,000 by Manx Lottery Trust to help fund its activities for adults with learning disabilities, Isle of Man Today reported.
The grant was made under the trust’s Community Awards scheme, which funds projects that help local communities and people in need with sums ranging from £2,501 to £50,000. According to the report, the money will allow the charity to continue sessions intended to keep members active, spark creativity and tackle loneliness.
Isle of Man Today said the charity runs activities for around 480 adults every week. Much of that work is based at Centre 21 in Douglas, which hosts sessions on three days a week all year round. These range from social clubs and karaoke to arts and crafts and appearances by local entertainer Uncle Fester. A separate weekly dance class is paid for by the Isle of Man Arts Council.
Debs Dixon of Manx Mencap said the programme “has become a real highlight for our members, and demand continues to grow”.
Beyond the regular sessions, members can go to monthly film nights and themed events, and meet visiting animals such as miniature horses, reptiles and birds of prey. Trips to the theatre, a yearly outing to the circus, adventure activities and a Christmas party also feature in the calendar.
