An estimate, not a count. No one registers births and deaths live. These numbers move at the average pace of the latest official figures and never mark a real birth or death. Past official estimates have been revised by a few hundred.
How this is calculated
We start at the official estimate of 84,975 residents at the end of March 2025, then add births, take away deaths and add net migration at the pace of the latest full year (567 births and 904 deaths in 2025, about 600 net arrivals a year), spread evenly across each calendar year. The full method, a check against past years and every source are further down.

Census 2026, Statistics Isle of Man
What the numbers say
The 2021 census counted 84,069 residents of the Isle of Man: 755 more than in 2016 (up 0.9%), and just under the 84,497 of 2011, the highest census count so far. Statistics Isle of Man’s latest estimate, which it labels experimental, puts the population at 84,975 at the end of March 2025.
More people die than are born here. The Civil Registry counted 904 deaths and 567 births in 2025, a natural decrease of 337, and deaths have outnumbered births in every year it publishes (since 2017).
What keeps the population growing is migration. The official estimate has 8,065 people arriving and 5,838 leaving since the census, a net gain of 2,227.
We are getting older: the median age rose from 42.5 in 2011 to 46.5 in 2021, and 22.1% of residents were 65 or over.
The next count is already done: census night was 26 April 2026 and its first results are scheduled for 18 June 2027. Until then the freshest official population figure is the March 2025 estimate, and the “live” number at the top of this page is a model, not a count.

How this page works: methods and sources
Three kinds of figure appear here. They are not the same thing, and the page labels each one.
Census
A count of everyone on the island, every ten years (with an interim census in between). The base for this page: 84,069 residents on census night in 2021. Exact, but old.
Official estimate
Statistics Isle of Man’s yearly estimate between censuses, built from income tax records. Labelled experimental: it can be restated as the method improves, and each report has revised the one before.
Live estimate
This page’s own model: the last official estimate plus the pace of recent births, deaths and migration. It is deterministic, built from published figures only, and does not use any outside “live population” counter.
How the live estimate is calculated
- Start from the last official estimate. 84,975 residents at the end of March 2025, from Statistics Isle of Man's Isle of Man Population Report 2025 (November 2025), itself built on the 84,069 counted at the 2021 census. The report calls its estimates experimental.
- Births. 567 births in 2025 (Civil Registry, by date of event) is one about every 15 hours 27 minutes.
- Deaths. 904 deaths in 2025 is one about every 9 hours 41 minutes.
- Net migration. +600 a year: the average of the report's estimates for 2022, 2023, 2024 (arrivals less departures). It is the least certain input, because departures are only recorded some time after people leave.
- Add them up from then until now. Each year's count is spread evenly over that calendar year, so a leap year runs a fraction slower per day. The population shown is the official estimate plus births, less deaths, plus net migration since the end of March 2025.
Checking the method on the past: using 2024's counts as the forecast for 2025 gives 574 births against the 567 that happened (+1.2%) and 925 deaths against 904 (+2.3%). Checking it against this year: by the end of September the model would have said about 424 births and 676 deaths in 2026; the registry has recorded 461 and 704. 2026 is running above 2025, so the live counters are probably a little low. Estimates get revised. The Isle of Man Population Report 2024 put the population at the end of 2022 at 84,432; the Isle of Man Population Report 2025 puts it at 84,172 (−260). Treat any estimate since the census as good to within a few hundred.
What it cannot know: real births and deaths on the day, changes in migration since March 2025, seasonal swings, or what the 2026 census will find. When the census results come out, the model will be re-based on them.
Is it up to date?
- Civil Registry figures run to 30 September 2026. Page checked against the sources 28 October 2026 at 11:44, island time.
- Latest population estimate: end of March 2025, from a report dated November 2025. Isle of Man Population Report 2026: cancelled. The 2026 census makes a population estimate unnecessary; some work will still be done to calibrate the estimating model against the new census data.
- Civil Registry: births and deaths: checked 28 October 2026 at 11:44
- Statistics Isle of Man: census and population: checked 28 October 2026 at 11:44
