Parkinson’s UK is holding a research and information event at the Comis Hotel on 20 October, Manx Radio has reported. All places have been taken.

The session will cover the condition and current developments in research into it. The charity says around 250 people on the island are living with Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s causes gradual, progressive damage to parts of the brain. According to Manx Radio, the cause is unknown for many people with the condition, and it is not inherited. Manx Radio also reported that there is no cure, although the range of treatments is growing. The condition affects each person differently.

Manx Radio reported that the charity has invested £130 million in research to date. Emma Hughes, Parkinson’s UK’s area development manager for the North West of England, told the station that people with and without the condition can take part in research trials.

The charity said it hopes to do more on the island in 2027 and wants residents to get involved in its research.
