A 220-tonne crane is due on the island on 4 November to lift the last two sections of the Peel power station chimney flue into place, according to Energy FM.
If the weather allows, the crane will be set up on Thursday 5 November, with lifting planned for that afternoon and again on 6 November.
A Manx Utilities Authority spokesperson said several parts of the flue were damaged in severe weather in 2025. According to the spokesperson, the damaged structures were made safe straight away, and repairs and refurbishment were carried out over 2025 and into early 2026.
The two replacement sections have now been fabricated and are being assembled at ground level ahead of the lift, the spokesperson said.
If set-up and lifting go to plan, the crane is expected to leave the site and go back to the UK over the weekend of 7 and 8 November. Energy FM reported that the whole schedule depends on the weather.
The spokesperson acknowledged that the Peel station is used less often than it once was. They described it as “an important backup generation asset” that helps keep the island’s electricity supply secure and resilient.
Once the new sections are in place, the repair programme will be finished, Energy FM reported.
