Isle of Man police have warned residents about emails that falsely claim to come from the Metropolitan Police.
A police spokesperson told Energy FM on Tuesday (27 October) that the messages tell recipients a case file has been opened about them and that they must cooperate. The emails go on to warn of further action under UK law if there is no reply.
According to 3FM, police on the island have had a number of reports from residents who received the official-looking messages. The station said the emails were fakes and their threats of legal action empty.
“Do not reply to these emails, click on any links or follow any instructions contained within them,” the spokesperson told Energy FM. Officers also told 3FM that people should never give away personal information in response.
Anyone who receives one of the emails is advised to delete it and report it to the Cyber Security Centre for the Isle of Man using its online form at csc.gov.im/cyber-concerns-online-reporting-form.
Police have also asked islanders to share the warning with friends, relatives or neighbours who might be more easily taken in by scams of this kind.
