Alan Greenhalgh has taken bronze at the European No-Gi Championships in Lisbon, Energy FM has reported. The medal makes it two European Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu podiums for the young Manx competitor inside six months.

The 14-year-old, who fights for Summit Grappling Academy, entered the Teen 2 Yellow Belt Under-67kg division. He beat an opponent from Gracie Barra in the quarter-finals, finishing the bout with a rear-naked choke.

In the semi-finals he met the reigning Brazilian No-Gi champion and was edged out 5-2 on points.

In April he won silver at the IBJJF European Kids Gi Championships in Dublin. The Gi and No-Gi formats are separate disciplines within the sport.

Conrad Roberts, head coach at Summit Grappling Academy, described winning two European medals in different disciplines at 14 as “an exceptional achievement”.

He said Greenhalgh’s quarter-final had been “dominant” and that running the Brazilian champion so close showed “the standard he’s reached”.

“His dedication and performances show what young Manx athletes can achieve internationally,” Mr Roberts added.

According to Energy FM, the academy has now added another medal to its results at major British and European events.
