Tesco has applied for planning permission to put a Timpson pod on part of the existing car park at its Lake Road superstore in Douglas, according to Manx Radio and Isle of Man Today.

The unit, application 26/00409/B, would be a joint venture between Tesco and Timpson Ltd. The planning statement lists services including key cutting, shoe repair, jewellery and watch repairs, engraving and dry cleaning. Manx Radio reported that no dry cleaning would be carried out on site, with items dropped off and collected at the kiosk.

The pod would measure 6.55m wide, 2.54m deep and 2.46m high, Manx Radio reported. The applicant said it believed the site had enough capacity “even at the busiest time of the year”.

If approved, it would open from 09:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 to 16:00 on Sundays. According to the planning statement, Timpson would seek to recruit one full-time employee to staff it.

Isle of Man Today reported that Lake Road, the island’s largest Tesco store, already has a Timpson self-service key-cutting machine, which has no dedicated staff. The planning statement says Timpson’s services rely on existing footfall, so the pod is not expected to increase traffic to the site.

The two companies formed a partnership several years ago, and small Timpson outlets have since opened at Tesco stores across the UK, Isle of Man Today said. The planning statement describes the Douglas pod as part of Timpson’s plan to expand its network of such units.

No date has yet been given for a decision on the application.
