The Isle of Man Choral Society is inviting singers of every level to spend Saturday 7 November learning contemporary choral music at its Really Big Manx Sing Workshop, held at Trinity Church, Rosemount, Douglas.

Conductor Janet McDowell will lead the day. According to Isle of Man Today, the repertoire draws on Karl Jenkins, John Rutter and Eric Whitacre, pairing well-known pieces with some that participants may not have sung before. McDowell has recently returned to the island’s music scene and now conducts several choirs, the paper reported.

The society says singers do not need any background in contemporary choral repertoire, and the workshop is not limited to members of existing choirs. Music will be supplied on the day.

Registration opens at 09:00. The £20 fee covers refreshments for the whole day.

The workshop finishes with an informal concert of the music learned during the day, at Trinity Church at 19:00. The public is invited to come along and listen.

Speaking to Isle of Man Today, Carole Sutherland said a choral workshop offered more than better singing. She said it could help musical development, build confidence and benefit wellbeing. Participants, she added, “can leave with new skills, new friendships and a shared sense of achievement”.
