Reducing hospital waiting lists would benefit the government’s finances by getting people back to work sooner, the Health Minister has said.

Claire Christian told Manx Radio that people who are unable to work while they wait for treatment represent lost tax income, and that helping them recover more quickly increases what government collects.

She said her own department does not benefit directly from that extra revenue. According to Manx Radio, she also said it can be difficult for the department to show the value of spending money on bringing waiting times down.

The minister explained that the Department of Health and Social Care has to show that a new service will make a difference to the public if it is to secure funding for it.

She added that the financial case was not the only consideration, telling Manx Radio it was also important to think of the patient.
