Island businesses are being urged to find out whether their websites are built using the programming language PHP, after a flaw was discovered in it.

The warning comes from Joe Hughes, chief executive of Manx Technology Group, an Isle of Man company that provides cyber security services, according to Manx Radio.

PHP is estimated to be used by between 60 and 70 per cent of websites, Manx Radio reported. The broadcaster said the flaw could leave websites vulnerable.

Mr Hughes said businesses that are unsure whether they are affected should contact their hosting company, their web developer and their IT provider.

He warned that older websites are likely to be the most vulnerable.

Details of the nature of the flaw, and of whether a fix has been released, were not given. Manx Radio said its latest newscast episode covers the risks posed by the flaw and what website owners should do.
