A newly qualified driver from Ramsey who was allowed to keep his licence in July despite reaching six penalty points has now had it revoked, after magistrates were told the original sentence was legally flawed, Isle of Man Today has reported.
The 29-year-old had admitted two charges of driving without R-plates on display and received three points for each, according to the newspaper.
Drivers on the island who have recently passed their test are legally obliged to show R-plates. An R-plate driver who reaches six points would ordinarily have their licence revoked.
When magistrates first sentenced him on 30 July, they did not impose a ban. Isle of Man Today reported that his advocate, Ian Kermode, had argued that losing his licence would cause the man exceptional hardship.
The case came back before the court in September. Magistrates heard that the July sentence was wrong because the Road Traffic Act does not allow an exceptional-circumstances argument to be made in R-plate cases, the newspaper said.
Magistrates then revoked his licence.
