The chair of the Isle of Man Farmers’ Market has described the decline in food production on the island over the past two decades as “quite frightening”.

Sheila Gawne was speaking to Manx Radio’s farming correspondent, Kirree Kermode, in an interview the broadcaster published on 28 October. The market will mark its 20th year next year.

Ms Gawne said advances in technology, changing diets and the weather had all played a part, according to Manx Radio. The broadcaster also reported that she was worried about the loss of food production skills.

Manx Radio’s report did not give figures for the scale of the decline, nor did it say which types of food production had been most affected.
