Douglas fireworks display moved to 26 November to open festive season

Douglas Council says problems getting fireworks to the island in time for Bonfire Night forced the change, with the display now due on the first night of late-night Christmas shopping.

Douglas Council’s annual fireworks display will now be held at 19:00 on Thursday 26 November instead of on Bonfire Night, and will open the festive season in the city centre, Manx Radio has reported.

The council said difficulties in shipping the fireworks to the island meant they would not arrive in time for early November. The rescheduled display falls on the first night of late-night Christmas shopping in Douglas.

There will be no parking on the promenade that evening, according to Manx Radio. Drivers can instead park free of charge at the Bottleneck and Shaw’s Brow car parks from 17:00.

The Department of Infrastructure has also offered to waive charges at Chester Street Car Park while the promenade is closed, the council said.

Natalie Byron-Teare, who chairs the council’s Regeneration and Community Committee, said the authority was “delighted to be able to confirm a new date” for the display.

She said problems outside the council’s control had stopped the fireworks reaching the island for early November, but the new date offered “something special” for residents and visitors.

Ms Byron-Teare said the council hoped that pairing the display with late-night shopping would bring people into Douglas to watch the fireworks, visit local shops and use the city’s hospitality businesses, which she described as a chance to support local traders.

She thanked the public for their patience and understanding, and the council’s partners for helping to arrange the new date.
