Douglas city centre will host a programme of Manx music, language, crafts and Hop-tu-Naa traditions this Saturday, 24 October, when Culture Vannin brings its Manx Day Out to the capital, according to Gef.

‘Manx Day Out in… Douglas’ runs from 11:00 to 17:00 and is part of Blein ny Gaelgey, the Year of the Manx Language. Many of the activities are free.

Venues include the Strand Shopping Centre, the area outside M&S, Douglas City Library, Douglas promenade and the Loft above the Conister Arms. The programme includes:

  • singing workshops and a children’s music and song workshop
  • a walking tour and folklore talks
  • Hop-tu-Naa craft activities and mini golf with a Manx language twist
  • a ‘Moot Treasure Hunt’ to find missing turnip lanterns, funded by the Isle of Man Arts Council
  • Manx music and dance performances on Strand Street

Because of the forecast, crafters’ and artists’ stalls will be inside the Strand Shopping Centre.

City centre manager Oliver Cheshire urged businesses to take part. He suggested they decorate shopfronts and “swap the pumpkins for Moots”, the traditional turnip lanterns.

Year of the Manx Language coordinator Tiffany Kerruish called it “such a fun start to the half-term holiday”. Visitors can collect stamps for their Mannin Aboo passports, which must be returned by Friday 6 November.
