The Isle of Man Art Society will host a lecture on Michelangelo at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre in Douglas on Tuesday 20 October, from 11:30 to 12:30.
Titled ‘Michelangelo: The Artist Who Saw Beyond the Human Form’, the talk will be given by Valerie Shrimplin, an honorary research associate at Gresham College in London, according to Isle of Man Today.
The Italian artist, born in 1475, is best known for the marble David, the Pietà and the Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted between 1508 and 1512. He later added The Last Judgment to the chapel and contributed to the design of the dome of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
According to Isle of Man Today, the lecture will go beyond those well-known works to explore the thinking behind them. It will cover how Michelangelo used anatomy, proportion and expression to convey ideas about beauty and spiritual meaning, and how Renaissance Italy shaped his outlook.
Ms Shrimplin specialises in Byzantine, medieval and Renaissance art and architecture. She has a keen research interest in how ideas from astronomy and cosmology found their way into art, which Isle of Man Today said would give the talk an extra dimension.
Admission is free for society members and students. Other guests will pay £10.
