Douglas City Council has set out its plans for the city’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations on 8 November, Isle of Man Today has reported.
Participants will gather at Market Hill from 09:15, and the parade will step off five minutes later. It will head along Duke Street and on into Strand Street, then follow Castle Street and Marina Road. From there it will turn along Church Road Marina and reach St Thomas’ Church by way of Finch Road.
The Mayor of Douglas, Councillor Steven Crellin JP, will be at the front of the procession. He will march with Douglas Town Band, members of the armed forces and the standard bearers.
The service inside the church begins at 10:00 and is expected to finish around 10:40. Those taking part will then move to the War Memorial, where the two minutes’ silence will be observed at 11:00 before wreaths are laid. The council is asking any organisation that wishes to be included in the wreath-laying to get in touch by email.
Mr Crellin described the occasion as an opportunity to “pause to remember the extraordinary sacrifices made by those who served their country”.
The council has announced these road closures for the Sunday:
- The streets directly surrounding St Thomas’ Church, from 09:30 until 11:00
- Harris Promenade and Church Road Marina, from 10:30 until 12:00
The memorial will also host a briefer act of remembrance three days later, on Wednesday 11 November, Armistice Day. Harris Promenade will be shut between 10:45 and 11:30 for that ceremony.
