The best chances are expected this evening and again before dawn on Tuesday, though Ronaldsway Met Office warns cloud may get in the way.

The northern lights could be visible from the island tonight (Monday 19 October) and into Tuesday morning, as a solar storm raises the chances of an aurora display, according to 3FM.

Aurora watchers cited by the station say the best viewing windows are likely to be:

  • 19:00 to 22:00 this evening
  • 04:00 to 07:00 on Tuesday morning

Whether anyone actually sees the display will depend on the weather. Ronaldsway Met Office expects a largely dry night, but said patches of cloud could obscure the sky.

Auroras happen when charged particles thrown out by the sun reach Earth’s atmosphere. Displays seen this far south are usually linked to stronger bursts of solar activity.

Anyone hoping to catch a glimpse may want to check the latest forecast from Ronaldsway before heading out.
