Douglas Rugby Club drew 34-34 away to Winnington Park in Regional Two North West on Saturday after a late try in the corner wiped out their five-point lead, Isle of Man Today reported.

The result earned Douglas three points from the first of back-to-back away games. According to the paper, the Northwich side had let in 50 points in each of their first three league matches, although those came against sides tipped for promotion.

Coach Phil Cringle was missing forwards Blake Snell and Simon Hoddinott, so Cal Dentith and Wilf Kermode switched from the backs into the back row. Josh Duncan came in at centre.

Winger Sam McCord gave Douglas an early lead with a charge-down try after eight minutes, converted by Matty Wood. Park replied with converted tries from Robin Lowndes and Joel Gaidan. A second McCord try left the visitors 14-12 down at the break.

Craig Martin went over early in the second half to put Douglas 19-14 in front. Park then turned down kickable penalties in favour of the corner, and tries from Harry Todd and Williams put them 26-19 ahead after 54 minutes.

McCord completed his hat-trick with a bonus-point try to make it 26-24. A penalty each took the score to 29-27. Conor Garland’s inside pass then sent Martin in for his second try, and Wood’s conversion put Douglas 34-29 up with five minutes to play.

Debutant Westly Nyman was then sin-binned for preventing a quick tap penalty. Park chose a scrum near the line and worked the ball wide for winger Dan Davenport to score in the corner. The conversion from the touchline did not carry, and the match finished level.

The draw spared Winnington Park a fourth successive defeat.
