A planning application has been submitted for what would be the island’s first indoor padel club, on The Nunnery estate in Douglas, according to Manx Radio.
The year-round scheme, called HABIT at The Nunnery, would also include a wild spa, an outdoor pool and a glasshouse dining area.
Manx Radio reported that the proposal comes from a group of well-known local business owners. They include Johnny and Loni Evans, who are behind Castletown Golf Links, and Miles and Pippa Petit, who run the Douglas hospitality business NOA.
The applicants say they want the facility to blend with the natural setting of the estate, the broadcaster reported.
According to Manx Radio, the plans aim to make the landscape at The Nunnery more varied and robust. They propose Manx hedge banks and nesting spaces for birds, bats and insects.
Johnny Evans told Manx Radio: “We share one ambition: to make something brilliant here.”
He said the intention was for the facility to be “not exclusive, not occasional - a place people fold into their everyday lives, all year round”. He added that it would be one more thing to make the island a special place to visit.
Manx Radio also quoted The Padel Garden Limited as saying: “This is happening all around the world; we should be doing it as well.”
The scheme will need the planning authority’s approval before it can go ahead. Manx Radio said a consultation on the application is due on 13 November.
The application can be viewed online, and further information about the project has been published for anyone wishing to follow its progress.
