The former Castletown Police Station has been sold subject to contract, only weeks after Manx National Heritage (MNH) put it up for sale, Energy FM has reported.
The building was marketed through Dean Wood Estate Agents, which sought offers in the region of £250,000. The listing now shows it as sold STC.
Tynwald approved MNH’s plan to dispose of the property earlier this year. Castletown Commissioners had objected, arguing that it should stay in public ownership. They suggested it could become a museum telling the story of policing on the island.
The station was designed by the architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott in 1895 and finished in 1901. It was the last commission he took on in the island before he moved back to England.
MNH has said it remains committed to looking after its historic estate. However, it does not have the money to invest in the building without affecting its other statutory duties. The heritage body said a sale gave the best chance of finding a responsible new owner and protecting the building’s future.
Whoever buys it will be bound by heritage protections. The former station is a Registered Building and stands within Castletown’s Conservation Area, so any alterations would face strict controls.
