Repair work has begun at Peel Castle after exposure to the weather left its outer walls “in a fragile state”, according to BBC News Isle of Man.

Scaffolding now surrounds the front entrance of the castle on St Patrick’s Isle, marking the start of the refurbishment and repair programme. The BBC described the work as critical.

The project is being overseen by John-Paul Walker, a historic buildings architect with Manx National Heritage, the body that cares for the island’s heritage sites.

He called the work an “important step in safeguarding one of the Isle of Man’s most iconic historic sites” against the effects of time and the castle’s exposed position on the coast.

Mr Walker said the project would focus on the Barbican wall at the castle entrance. There, he said, specialist contractors will “repair and protect historic masonry using traditional conservation techniques and locally sourced materials”.

The aim is to restore the castle’s curtain wall, which runs for nearly 1km around the site, the BBC reported. It noted that visitors who walk the ramparts are rewarded with views of the town and the chance to spot seals and basking sharks offshore.

No timescale for the works, or details of their cost, was given in the BBC’s report.

The castle dates from the 11th century and was built by the Vikings, according to the BBC. It is among the island’s most historic sites and one of its most popular attractions, drawing thousands of visitors each year.

St Patrick’s Isle is also known for its archaeological finds. Among the best known is the grave of the so-called Pagan Lady, in which a Viking necklace was discovered.
