Two robotics teams from Isle of Man Code Club are back on the island after taking part in the WRO Open Championship Europe in Zagreb earlier in October, according to Energy FM.

Team Ellan Vannin and Team Mann Iron competed in the Elementary and Senior categories. It was the first time either side had entered an international robotics event, and they joined young competitors from many countries in the Croatian capital.

The teams won their places earlier this year. They did well at regional rounds in Edinburgh and then at national finals in Leicester, where island teams earned the right to compete abroad.

Through the club, members have been building skills in programming, engineering and problem-solving. Energy FM reported that the Senior team designed its own robot components, produced them on a 3D printer and fitted bespoke electronics to its entry.

Steve Wilson, who coaches and mentors the teams, praised their efforts. He told Energy FM that the trip would bring them into contact with the international robotics community and demonstrate what young people can do with technology and STEM education.

The journey was funded by the company Danucore, which also sent staff to Zagreb to support the island’s competitors.

Isle of Man Code Club credited the young people, its volunteer coaches, families and supporters, saying their commitment had helped the island’s robotics community grow and could encourage future generations into technology and engineering careers.
