A Costcutter convenience store in Castletown was officially opened on Thursday 22 October, and the business behind it says it hopes to increase the amount of local produce on its shelves.

The shop, at Station Garage, began trading in June after the site was taken over from the Owen family, Manx Radio reported. Children from the nearby Victoria Road Primary School carried out the official opening.

Matt Lewis, operations manager for Retail Services Ltd, told Manx Radio that the door was always open to local producers who want to supply the store.

According to Manx Radio, figures from the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture show that only around 6% of the food eaten on the island is produced here.

Peter Whittaker, project manager for Retail Services Ltd, told the broadcaster that the store had been a success since it opened. He credited that to its commitment to the community.
