Newly elected MHKs were quick to make their mark at the first Tynwald sitting since this year’s general election, according to the new Speaker of the House of Keys.

Mr Ashford, the Douglas North MHK, said it was “wonderful” to see how many members delivered their maiden speeches, Manx Radio reported.

Those speeches came during a debate on a plan for the Council of Ministers to draw up a Government Programme covering the next five years. Members backed the proposal unanimously, according to Manx Radio.

The programme is to set out the “current challenges and opportunities that face the Island” and explain how the new administration plans to address them, the broadcaster reported.

Tynwald, the island’s parliament, brings together the House of Keys, its elected chamber, and the Legislative Council. The sitting took place on Tuesday 20 October.
