Education Minister Sarah Maltby has told Tynwald the island needs more apprenticeships and clearer routes from the classroom into work, according to Energy FM.
Speaking on 20 October in her first speech since her appointment, Mrs Maltby said the island’s economic future and its education priorities had to work together. She said apprenticeships were one of the best ways to strengthen that connection.
She said an apprenticeship should be treated as “a positive and respected route into a skilled career, not as a second choice” for those who do not take an academic path.
The minister called for stronger links between schools, further education, employers and industry, so that young people understand the opportunities on offer and can build the skills those roles demand. She also said access to post-16 education and the way the curriculum prepares pupils for their next steps should be kept under review.
Her remarks came during the first Tynwald debate of the new administration, on Chief Minister Chris Thomas’s motion calling for the Council of Ministers to produce a policy report, with an annual debate on it. The motion was supported unanimously, Energy FM reported.
