Stephen Garrett, who has twice run middle-distance track events for the Isle of Man at the Island Games, has set a marathon personal best of 2:48:39 in Chicago, Energy FM Sport reported.
Garrett reached halfway in 1:26:33 and then quickened, running 1:22:06 for the second half, a negative split of more than four minutes.
He lives away from the island and is not currently a Manx Harriers member. But Energy FM Sport said he chose to race in the club vest to show his Isle of Man connection.
Chicago was his second marathon. His first was in Barcelona last year, where he said he “didn’t respect the distance and crashed hard at 30km”.
This time he followed a programme set by Alan Corlett, averaging around 40 miles a week over the past four to five months.
Garrett said his aim had been to get under 2:50 to earn good-for-age entries for 2027 races, including New York.
“I was absolutely delighted with the result,” he told Energy FM Sport. “Everything went my way on the day, which is rare over that distance!”
