Welcome to The Cooish, our round-up of what the island is talking about. This week the conversation is mostly sport: one runner a long way from home, and plenty of teams with something to play for.

Stephen Garrett, who has competed for the island twice at the Island Games over middle distances on the track, has set a big new personal best at the Chicago Marathon, finishing in 2:48:39, Energy FM reports.

The shape of the run is what catches the eye. Energy FM says he reached halfway in 1:26:33 and covered the second half in 1:22:06, more than four minutes faster than the first. Most of us speed up only when we spot a café.

Garrett lives off-island and is not currently a Manx Harriers member. According to Energy FM, he still chose to race in the club’s vest in Chicago to show where his loyalties lie.

At The Bowl, FC Isle of Man host Atherton LR with a single point between the two sides, Manx Radio reports. The broadcaster says Dixon wants to see a response from the team.

In the island’s own football leagues, Manx Radio says a number of clubs are trying to reel in the two sides at the top of the premier league. In Division 2, Castletown go into the weekend narrowly ahead.

In rugby, Isle of Man Today describes the Douglas RUFC side heading to Winnington Park as “much-changed”. The paper says the number of changes, combined with playing away, leaves Douglas facing a tough afternoon.

The Vagabonds Ladies are looking to follow their big win at Aldwinians with another good result, according to Manx Radio.

The island’s hockey season is nearing its halfway stage. Manx Radio describes the campaign so far as mixed, with every point counting at both the top and the bottom of each division.

Whether you are heading to The Bowl, following the rugby from afar or quietly working out your own marathon splits, it should be a busy weekend for Manx sport. Enjoy it, and wrap up warm.
