Manx Utilities presses ahead with solar-powered EV charging hub at Ronaldsway

The airport hub will pair ultra-rapid chargers with on-site solar panels and battery storage, and follows new ultra-rapid charging at the Sea Terminal in Douglas.

Manx Utilities says work is progressing on an ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging hub at Ronaldsway Airport, which will draw on solar generation and battery storage on site.

The project is being developed with the Department of Infrastructure and the airport. It follows the recent completion of ultra-rapid charging at the Sea Terminal, and Manx Utilities said that once both schemes are in place, the island’s two main gateways will each have charging facilities.

The utility said the hub is intended to keep charging provision in step with the growing number of electric vehicles on the island, while putting solar power generated at the airport to good use.

A Manx Utilities spokesperson described the hub as “an important addition to the Island’s charging network”, serving residents, businesses and visitors.

Airport Director Mark Beveridge said the airport wanted its facilities to keep pace with the community’s changing needs. He called convenient EV charging “another positive step”, adding that it would make better use of the airport’s estate and support the island’s wider sustainability goals.

Manx Utilities has not given a completion date or cost for the scheme. It said further updates would follow as the project progresses.
