Bride Parish Commissioners have asked residents decorating their gardens for Halloween not to use fake cobwebs, warning that the material can be deadly for small animals.

The local authority made the appeal in a post on its Facebook page, which was reported by 3FM.

The commissioners said wildlife can become trapped in the decorations. They named birds, mice and hedgehogs among the creatures at risk and said animals caught in the material can suffer a slow death.

The parish authority said it wanted people to have a great Halloween. But it asked them to keep the island’s wildlife in mind when deciding how to decorate their outdoor spaces.

Halloween falls on 31 October.
