The Speaker of the House of Keys, David Ashford, has said he intends to be an active questioner of ministers in Tynwald. All three questions tabled for this month’s sitting have come from him, Manx Radio reported.
Mr Ashford, the MHK for Douglas North, told the broadcaster he would be exercising his right as a parliamentarian by putting questions to the Government.
As Speaker, Mr Ashford presides over the House of Keys, the elected chamber of Tynwald, and the role requires him to remain impartial during its sittings.
According to Manx Radio, that requirement does not apply at Tynwald’s monthly sitting. Members of the Keys and the Legislative Council sit together there.
That allows him to table questions to ministers at Tynwald sittings.
The October sitting will be the first meeting of Tynwald since the general election. Manx Radio has reported that it is expected to focus on the island’s future. The broadcaster has also reported that the Chief Minister wants to publish a new plan for the island in November.
Manx Radio’s report did not set out the subjects of Mr Ashford’s three questions.
