A fault with the runway edge lights closed the runway at Isle of Man Airport this evening. The closure led to the cancellation of the 15:50 easyJet flight to Liverpool and other services in and out of Ronaldsway, Manx Radio and Isle of Man Today reported.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) update gives 20:45 as the time the runway will remain closed until. NOTAMs are formal notices that warn pilots and air traffic control of anything that could affect flights, from hazards to temporary restrictions.
EasyJet flight EZY518 was initially delayed. Manx Radio reported it had been put back to 18:30, with arrival in Liverpool expected at 19:03. Passengers boarded at about 17:30 and waited on the aircraft for an update.
Manx Radio reported at 18:31 that it understood the flight had been cancelled. Isle of Man Today said the cancellation was confirmed after the new departure time had been set.
Manx Radio said the service was believed to be the last departure of the day, and Isle of Man Today said it was scheduled to be the final one. Both outlets reported that the airport’s other flights this evening had been cancelled.
EasyJet told passengers the runway had been shut because of a “failure of the runway lighting system”, according to Manx Radio. The airline apologised and said it was trying to keep the delay to a minimum and would fly once it was safe.
The airline described the disruption as outside its control and “an extraordinary circumstance”.
Both outlets said they had asked Isle of Man Airport for comment. No statement from the airport had been reported, and no cause for the lighting failure has been given.
The 20:45 time in the NOTAM relates to the runway closure. Neither outlet reported when normal services would resume.
