Jurby Commissioners urge DoI to move 30mph limit to protect estate play area

The local authority says the speed limit ends just short of the new Ballagarraghyn estate's entrance, which it calls dangerous for the village's children.

Jurby Commissioners are calling on the Department of Infrastructure to move the village’s 30mph zone to help protect a children’s play area at a new housing estate, Manx Radio has reported.

According to the local authority, the speed restriction ends a short distance before the entrance to the Ballagarraghyn estate. The commissioners consider this “dangerous” for young people in Jurby.

The board said the issue had been going on for several months and was raised at hustings during the House of Keys election campaign.

Commissioner Hilary Fletcher told Manx Radio’s Local Democracy Reporter, Emma Draper, that three pets from the estate had been killed over the summer. She attributed the deaths to the speed of vehicles on Bretney Road.

The commissioners want the 30mph limit repositioned so that it covers the estate and its play area.

Manx Radio said the Department of Infrastructure had been contacted for comment.
