Infrastructure department seeks permission for fencing at fire-hit Union Mills building

The plans for palisade fencing beside the heritage railway line would require 13 trees to be felled, according to Manx Radio.

The Department of Infrastructure is seeking planning approval for security fencing at a Union Mills building that was damaged in a fire in January.

According to Manx Radio, the department proposes palisade fencing on the side of the Union Mills industrial estate that borders the heritage railway line. The broadcaster reported that the aim is to give the site a “medium to high level” of security.

The building, the Old Marown Engineering Building, is used for storage. Manx Radio said the January blaze there forced the closure of the public footpath for several hours.

Thirteen trees would have to come down to clear space for the fencing, the broadcaster reported.

No decision has yet been made on the application.
