Islanders are being urged to treat emails demanding payment for a TV licence with caution, after the Government’s Cyber Security Centre reported a rise in fraudulent messages.

According to 3FM, the centre said it had seen an increase in emails that claim to come from TV Licensing but are not genuine.

The centre’s advice to anyone who receives one of the messages is to:

  • avoid clicking on any links in the email
  • not provide any personal information
  • not make any payments online in response

Anyone who is unsure whether a message is genuine can contact the organisation directly, using contact details they know and trust, the centre said.

3FM reported the warning on 20 October. Its report did not say how many of the emails had been received or whether anyone on the island had lost money as a result.
