Two admit helping 12 non-UK nationals enter the island unlawfully

A man and a woman from Douglas pleaded guilty to assisting unlawful immigration and will be sentenced at the Court of General Gaol Delivery on 30 October.

A man and a woman have pleaded guilty to 12 counts of assisting unlawful immigration after arranging for non-UK nationals to come to the island by fraud or deception, according to Isle of Man Today.

The pair, both from Douglas, entered their pleas on Thursday 15 October before Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood at the Courts of Justice in Douglas.

The offences took place between June 2022 and October 2023 and involved 12 non-UK nationals, who were named in court, Isle of Man Today reported.

The two admitted acting together to facilitate breaches of immigration law by non-UK nationals. They did so by recruiting people and arranging for them to enter, arrive in or be on the island through fraud or deception.

Five further counts of the same offence were ordered to lie on file. This means they will not be pursued for now, but they remain on the court record.

Alternative charges brought under the Organised International Crime Act 2010 were discharged. The prosecution also withdrew a separate charge of participating in a criminal organisation.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court the guilty pleas were acceptable to the Crown. He said pursuing the remaining counts to trial was not considered to be in the public interest.

The Deputy High Bailiff ruled that the offences were not suitable for summary trial, meaning they are too serious to be dealt with by the summary court. She committed both defendants to the Court of General Gaol Delivery, the island’s higher criminal court, for sentencing.

Both were granted bail on the same conditions as before and are due to appear at the higher court on 30 October.
