The Cooish: swimmers romp home, boxers gear up and orienteers head into the dark

A 75-point swimming win, a national semi-final in Kettering and a night event in South Barrule Forest lead this week's sports round-up.

It has been a busy sporting week on the island, with wins, championships and a few mechanical headaches to show for it. Here is what has been doing the rounds.

A swim team in no mood to hang about

The Isle of Man Swim Team opened its National Arena Swimming League season in commanding style. According to Energy FM, the 38-strong squad won the first North West Division Two round in Ellesmere Port on Saturday 10 October by a margin of 75 points.

They were 11 points clear after only 10 events and, Energy FM reported, never eased off, finishing on 263 points from 51 swims. The other teams competing were Swim Conwy and Knutsford.

Off to Kettering

An Isle of Man boxer has fought her way into a national semi-final and, with it, a place among England’s top four, Isle of Man Today reports. The semi-final is in Kettering on Saturday, and a win there would send her through to the national final the following day.

Devine back between the ropes

There is more boxing to look forward to. Manx Radio says Jamie Devine is returning to the ring next month, a quick turnaround after his success in September.

Champions crowned on the rally stages

The Manx rally championship has been settled, with Hardy and Radcliffe taking the top spots, according to Manx Radio. The final two rounds of the season were run during the Chris Kelly Rally.

Frustration at the 6DAYS

Not every story this week has a happy ending. Manx Radio reports that McCanney and Keenan both retired from the 6DAYS enduro meeting with technical problems. Anyone who has spent time with an uncooperative engine will sympathise.

Into the forest after dark

For those who prefer their sport with a bit of mystery, a night orienteering event is coming to South Barrule Forest next week, Isle of Man Today reports. Organisers say it is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, so there is no need to be a seasoned navigator to take part.

That is the Cooish for today. Good luck to everyone competing this weekend, and to the orienteers: bring a good torch.
