Families can now claim Child Benefit online, the government has said, as it continues work to bring more Social Security services into the digital age.

Treasury Minister Chris Thomas said applicants would be able to apply, upload documents securely and manage their claim on the web. He said this offered “a convenient and efficient service that better meets the expectations of today’s users”.

Mr Thomas said the change demonstrated the department’s commitment to improving accessibility. He added that it would help with “reducing paperwork and delivering public services in a way that is both secure and customer focused”.

Child Benefit joins several other benefits that can already be claimed online, including:

  • Income Support
  • Incapacity Benefit
  • Employed Person’s Allowance

According to Manx Radio, Jobseeker’s Allowance is the next benefit lined up for an online application, and the government expects it to go live within four to six months.
