It was a weekend when the island seemed to be out on a pitch, a course or a track somewhere. Here is what people are talking about.
Any Corinthians supporter who headed for the exit a few minutes early on Saturday may want to look away. According to Isle of Man Today, Robertshaw scored twice in injury time to salvage a point for Peel at Douglas Road. Corinthians were denied at the very last, and Peel had something to tell people about on the way home.
There was no late tension in Division Two, where Michael United put seven past DHSOB, Isle of Man Today reported. Thomas Redmond, formerly of Marown, led the way with a hat-trick for the Aces. That is the sort of scoreline that gets a mention at training for weeks.
On Sunday, 11 October, the Isle of Man Cross-Country League opened its season at Port-e-Chee in glorious sunshine, Energy FM reported. Paul Atherton won the senior men’s race. It was his first victory in the league after many years of competing and plenty of high placings. Alex Bell was second, and John Halligan, in Energy FM’s words, rolled back the years to take third.
The senior women’s race went to Christa Cain on her first appearance in the league. She had already completed a 35km training run on the road that morning. Most of us would count that as the day’s exercise done, and then some.
Portugal was a focus for island motor sport. Manx Radio reported that Ellis achieved his highest ever finish in the Ligier European Series as he closed out his 2026 season there.
The mood was more sombre for others also in Portugal. Isle of Man Today described a bitter disappointment for the island’s riders at the International Six Days Enduro, which is holding its 100th edition in the country.
Indoors, the island’s table tennis team made a solid start in the British Table Tennis League, Isle of Man Today reported. The squad included island champion Sam Bailey, Duncan Alexander, Becky Bayley and a promising teenager.
In hockey, Manx teams began their England Hockey Championship campaigns. Five junior sides played opponents from Chester, Kirkby Stephen, Preston and Timperley, and the island’s women’s over-45s took on Aire Valley. It is a busy start to the season for players, parents and everyone who keeps the squads on the road.
If you spent the weekend on the sofa, there is always next Saturday.
