Former Chief Minister Alfred Cannan has thanked the island’s business community and his constituents following the appointment of Chris Thomas as his successor, according to Energy FM.
In separate posts on Facebook and LinkedIn, Mr Cannan looked back on ten years in senior government roles, including spells as Treasury Minister and, more recently, Chief Minister, the broadcaster reported.
On LinkedIn, he thanked people in the private sector who had offered him advice and support during his time in office. He reserved particular praise for those who worked alongside government in the first months of the Covid-19 pandemic, helping to put together economic and community support measures.
Describing his years in government, he said he had been privileged to work with “so many talented people”, and voiced confidence that the island could meet the challenges ahead.
Mr Cannan argued that jobs and employment opportunities would remain key to the island’s prosperity in the long run, adding: “We can never stop working to support our economy.” He closed by wishing the business community every success.
On Facebook, the Ayre and Michael MHK thanked voters for once again returning him to the House of Keys, the elected chamber of Tynwald. He said their backing had allowed him to serve in both ministerial posts over the past decade.
“I am immensely grateful for that support and the courtesy which has been shown to me,” he said.
Mr Cannan said he would now concentrate on delivering his manifesto pledges and improving the constituency, while helping to ensure “the island continues to offer us all a secure home for the future”.
He also indicated that he plans to stay active in public life, saying he would continue to help and support where he could.
