The Council of Ministers is recruiting three lay members for the Appointments Commission, the body that selects and appoints people to tribunals and other public bodies, Energy FM has reported.

According to the station, the commission’s job is to help ensure those appointments are made fairly, transparently and on merit.

The posts are open to people who are not Members of Tynwald. Energy FM said applicants should be able to bring independent judgement and objectivity, along with an interest in public service.

The lay members would play a part in overseeing how appointments are made and in assessing applications. Energy FM said they would also help safeguard the independence of the island’s tribunals.

According to the station, terms usually last five years and each appointment must be approved by Tynwald. The commission meets at least once a month, and members are currently paid £78 for each session they attend, with travel expenses on top.

Applications close on 26 October.
